THE SEA IS MY GRAVE

This story tells of Bill's life and all that he’d seen, sailing the seas, on a British submarine. He cast his fate to the wind, and let his spirit roam free, FIGHTING FOR FREEDOM on the open sea .Of battles fought hard, and brave shipmates lost, all through World War II ,at such a great cost. The sea is Bill's grave now, the last post his tune, a brave hero sadly missed, but most especially in June.  John L.D.Barnett.

It was a hard dangerous life in the Royal Navy during World War II but a very rewarding one!

To the relief of the whole crew Unison returned to Malta on 31 March 1943, to fight another day, flying her Jolly Roger victory flag as she entered her base, to the roaring cheers of the crowds who were lining the docks as she entered Malta’s Grand harbour. Bill felt enormously proud that day, but later in a letter to his father told him that he was glad to get back in one piece so he could have a shower, and change his trousers.

Author  John L D Barnett     Autobiography

After finally leaving Secondary Modern school at the age of fifteen, I worked in a Sheffield steel works as an apprentice Electrician, obtaining my City and Guilds certificate in Iron and Steel before leaving home. At the age of sixteen I lived and worked in Coventry for a few months, before joining up at the end of 1964 with the British forces. I was posted firstly with the 24th Royal Artillery Missile Regiment, serving in Germany, and then transferred to the Royal Military Police, serving in Germany, the Middle East and Hong Kong. After serving for nine years with the British forces, I took a job as Chief Security Officer in the 1970s, working for my friend the King of Bahrain in the Persian Gulf. I arrived back in England in the early 70s, sailing and working on the Grimsby fishing trawlers as a 2nd Engineer, when the Cod Wars with Iceland were at their peak. I then married June, a local girl from the Grimsby area, and have now been happily married for the past 38 years, having raised two boys who now have children of their own.

In 2002 I eventually retired through ill health at the age of 56, after a successful 28-year career as a HGV Class 1 Petroleum Tanker Driver for Burmah Castrol, and as the Driver Foreman for Q8 Petroleum. During the late 1990s and early 2000 I become a very successful property developer, buying, selling and renting property in the Grimsby area. During the last few years, I have taken up writing and illustrating books in my spare time.

Authors autobiography, is a ‘must read’ recommended for general audiences, and in particular those veteran’s (both men and women) who served proudly on behalf of their King, and then Queen and Country.
